Though they all offer the basics: camel rides, jeep tours, and a place to sleep under the stars, each one seems to have its own distinct character. So what is it that makes a Wadi Rum camp great? It is our strong opinion that in Wadi Rum, fancier by no means equals better. For us, the winning combination is prime location, cleanliness, and authenticity. Location We’re looking for camps whose locations offer an excellent view of the mountains and sand dunes, one that’s not littered with the silhouettes of other camps. We strongly prefer camps located within the Wadi Rum Protected Area, which generally feels better regulated, less populated and more wild. We’re always on the lookout for the most inviting campfire, as this is the heart of the camp, the place where guests will congregate to while away evening hours sipping sage tea and stargazing. The roadside coffee stand fashioned in the shape of a larger-than-life mug comes to mind. Or a truck laden with the most precious kind of cargo: a camel, eyes closed, fur tousled by the breeze. Or most recently, a small village named Al Mansaf (pictured right) presumably in honor of Jordan’s national rice and lamb dish?! ... to name just a few. I marvel at the fact that some of the most extraordinary roads and vistas in the world can be found just beyond the reach of Amman’s congested traffic. So we stocked up on snacks - thus begins any truly great Jordanian roadtrip - and made our way west towards the sunset, venturing about an hour and a half outside of Amman to one of my favorite places: the ancient fort of Mukawer (pictured left'; also known as Machaerus). These amazing ruins stand sentry on one of the highest hills overlooking the heart of the Dead Sea, and are beautifully illuminated at night. Over the course of the past month, we witnessed a terrifying new dimension of the genocide: the onset of famine after five months of Israeli blockade. As forced starvation raged unabated, the intensity of those early emotions returned - the anger, the guilt, the helplessness. All residue of our continuous reckoning, consciously and unconsciously, with the inversion of our reality in Jordan against the reality of Gaza. Looking back at July, it is a month that feels most clearly defined by moments we abstained from continuing with life as normal. Moments we accommodated the grief and the rage that we had grown accustomed to pushing away. And so I’m writing this month’s newsletter about something we didn’t do. The hike culminates in a 20-foot waterfall tumbling into a churning misty swimming hole.
